Still Life with Pumpkins and Cucumbers

The three pumpkins symbolise not only wealth and prosperity but also God’s mercy and a passageway to another dimension. The three gherkins refer to the Resurrection, and the thistle to the earthly sufferings of Christ and other martyrs. Notice also the frog, referring to death, and the birds devouring insects under the bark of a tree-stump, thanks to which the painting may also be interpreted as a criticism of social and ecclesias-tical relations in the contemporary Kingdom of Hungary.
