Andy Warhol first painted instant soup cans on various kinds of canvas. At his first solo exhibition in 1962 in Los Angeles he installed these paint-ings in a monotonous row, so as to evoke their models on supermarket shelves. Later he also created two series of silkscreen prints. Until Warhol made the portrait of the soup can a beacon of pop art, it had simply been a mass-produced object known to all. Suddenly, however, it be-came an artwork referring to the ubiquity of mass culture and serial production.
